The cliche 'City of Lakes' has struck to its name. And why not, two of these at its heart provide the very lifeline of the city. There are 14 lakes and as many hills and hillocks in and around the city.

Founded in the 11th century AD by the famous Emperor Raja Bhoj, Bhopal still retains the historic imprint of its former rulers. During the period of British hegemony over India. Bhopal was the second largest Muslim state. From 1819 to 1926 was era of famed Begums during which Bhopal attained it zenith.

In 1949, it acceded to the Indian Federation and on Nov. 1st, 1956, it was made the capital of the newly carved state of Madhya Pradesh. As Bhopal spread and flourished, many industries like BHEL, HEG, Lupin etc came into existence.

But the night of Dec.3rd, 1984 cast an evil eye on this beautiful city when the biggest industrial disaster in human history at Union Carbide left an indelible scar on Bhopal. But despite this, Bhopal moved on...

Whereabouts

The 285 sq.kms of undulating landscape of Bhopal, well punctuated with water bodies has a lovely climate during Dec-Jan. The day temperatures are around 18-24 degrees and the night temperatures around 8-10deg. The morning and evening chill accentuated by cool breeze and the delightful fragrances of flowers in full bloom gives it a romantic air.

Bhopal has a number of sight-seeing delights. It boasts of the glory of bygone era architecture like Taj-ul-Masajid, the largest mosque of Asia on one hand and the most modern state-of-art Vidhan Sabha designed by Charles Correa on the other hand. Bharat Bhavan - the seat of art and culture, The Indira Gandhi Manav Sanghralaya - the exhibition of Tribal Habitat dwellings are a 'must-see' in Bhopal.

The various other visiting places are Van Vihar, Lake View Drive, Aquarium, Birla Mandir, Bhojpur, Kerwa Dam and many gardens like Rose Garden, Jawaharlal Nehru Rose Garden, Nandan Kanan etc. Bhopal is also near to two World Heritage sites Sanchi the site of Buddhist Stupa & Buddhist monastries, Bhimbetka - cave dwellings of Neolithic Age.

Easy to Reach

Since Bhopal is located at the centre of India, it is connected by Air, Rail and Road. Direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai twice a day can help you reach Bhopal. Rail connections are the best and the most convenient way of reaching the city. There are several fast & super fast trains from all major cities. Buses, both State Transport as well as private, also ply quite frequently connecting Bhopal.
